In fact, Maryland had the 6th highest number of job postings for cybersecurity analysts, engineers, architects, auditors, and administrators in the country that year, while Baltimore had the 10th highest of any city. Cybersecurity expert positions can be difficult to fill due to the demand for these specialists. As competition for top talent increases, so do starting salary offers. Burning Glass Technologies reported that cybersecurity positions pay 9% more than IT jobs in general.

Both the federal government and businesses invest heavily in cybersecurity in Maryland. Prominent cyber centers in the state include:

  • NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence

Maryland aggressively courts new cybersecurity companies by offering a 33% tax credit to qualifying companies for investments of up to $250,000. A 2015 Forbes article cited this tax credit to make a case for implementing a federal-level tax credit for cybersecurity investment.

In addition, Montgomery County offers its own tax credit to cybersecurity companies that locate there. The county’s robust cybersecurity industry employed more than 3,000 people as of 2016 according to the Montgomery County Workforce Investment Board.
